Hope House (first) is established.
1956
Founded by Jack Donahue, a retired post office employee and recovering alcoholic, it is located initially a former rooming house at 42 Upton Street. The institution is an outgrowth of his efforts that began in 1955 when he began taking in small groups of alcoholic men into his apartment on Montgomery Street. A residential treatment program, it becomes a model for other halfway houses. Incorporated in 1965, it expands to five sites in the South End before moving to its current location on Farnham Street in 2009.*
